Laal became particularly recognized for setting the poetry of major Urdu poets, including Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Habib Jalib, to contemporary music.
Laal emerged from Lahore's independent music scene in 2008. The band developed a distinctive identity by bringing together rock instrumentation and Urdu poetry with strong social themes.
The group's approach was different from mainstream pop music because its songs often focused on ideas of hope, freedom, equality and social awareness.

Shahram Azhar was also a former member of the band and contributed vocals and guitar.

Through Laal, he helped bring progressive Urdu poetry to younger audiences through contemporary rock arrangements.
Laal's music combines Sufi rock, progressive rock and alternative rock. One of the band's defining features is its use of established Urdu poetry rather than relying only on conventional pop songwriting.
The combination of poetry, guitars, vocals and traditional musical elements gives Laal a distinctive sound within Pakistan's independent music scene.
Poetry is at the heart of Laal's musical identity. The band has performed and recorded works connected with poets such as Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Habib Jalib.
Its songs often explore themes such as hope, social justice, resistance, freedom and the experiences of ordinary people. This lyrical focus has helped Laal develop an audience beyond conventional rock listeners.
Laal released its debut album, Umeed-e-Sahar, in 2009. The album was released through Fire Records and introduced the band's distinctive mixture of Urdu poetry and modern rock music to a wider audience.
The album includes tracks such as “Umeed-e-Sahar,” “Sadaa,” “Jaag Punjab,” “Dastoor,” “Zulmat,” “Mat Samjho,” “Na Judaa” and “Jaago.”
Laal's second major album, Utho Meri Duniya, followed in 2012, with releases associated with Times Music India and Fire Records in Pakistan.
The album continued the band's focus on socially meaningful poetry and contemporary musical arrangements.

As of 2026, Laal remains recognized as a Pakistani band associated with alternative, progressive and Sufi rock music. Its recorded catalogue and poetry-based musical identity continue to represent an important part of Pakistan's independent music history.
